    more beer, more gigs...
So Hanna had decided to go to this gig by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. This American dark bluesy three piece that she remembers she liked from 3RRR days. Tickets have sold out, so we head down to the venue anyway and hang around outside for scalpers. There's 2 guys there doing the rounds. We get chatting to this American dude who's come to London on he's way to Germany especially for this gig that he has emailed the organiser and sweet talked him online to score free entry. Funny dude - he bought us all Fosters cos he was so pumped. Chatted to this other Aussie guy David waiting for tickets and we all ended up getting some for less that double of what they were worth (which wasn't too bad).

First band - Brian Jonestown Massacre - were as boring as drying shit. But apparently they take heaps of drugs and have been in some cool indie doco with the Dandy Warhols. BRMC were pretty cool and i was surprised to recognise about 4 or 5 of their songs. Small venue that was lit dark and smoky. Good crowd vibe and the Aussie bloke had a hash joint that he shared with me (although it burnt out in like a minute and a half). Got pretty drunk and enjoyed the night immensly.

Next day, Hanna finally joins the ranks of the-Lucky-Dwyers-&-Co. by winning tickets to this gig as part of Patti Smiths meltdown festival. > http://www.efestivals.co.uk/festivals/meltdown/2005/

So anywho, we get to see this crazy algerian rock firebrand Rachid Taha at the Royal Festival Hall as well as Mick Jones support band Carbon/Silicon that were totally shite! Strange to think how someone so cool from influencial bands like the Clash and Big Audio Dynamite could dribble out this old and tired clichéd 'rock' band. I mean he/they were still obviously enjoying themselves but i couldn't help but think of KC famous line 'it's better to burn out, than to fade away'... oh well.

The support band were heaps more weird and more fun. Everybody in the crowd was jumping around in their seats and down at the front of the stage. Most of the set wasn't in English, but it didn't matter - it was about the spectacle. Some guy wrote: "Since the 80s, Rachid Taha has careened through post-punk, reggae, rock, hip hop and rai to produce, tonight, a molotov cocktail of militant, edgy, raw, dangerous, furious and declamatory sound. Music with attitude, much like The Clash. In fact, Taha recently recorded a tribute to Joe Strummer, Rock el Kasbah, in which he seamlessly mixed the familiar Clash riffs with North African influences, and lo and behold Mick Jones and Patti Smith both joined Taha on stage tonight and rocked out to an explosive rendition". Pretty funny gig all in all. Older and gayer crowd that most gigs i go to, but real good vibe.

And strangely enough, after the main show and in the venue 'foyer' kind of thing there's still another band to play and finish the night - BLMC!! 2 nights in a row! crazy coincidence, but couldn't really be fucked this night as it didn't compare to the night before at all, so we went home, still satisfied.

Tonight I'm actually meeting up with David the Australian to see Cut Copy the Australian band. Maybe we'll share a few Fosters the Australian beer..

    =w= ROCK!!!
homos, Weezer were really cool. They played at Brixton Academy, which is sorta like the forum only bigger. I was balcony level, but only 5 rows back so had a pretty good view of everything. I was really excited (after 3 pints) before they came out, but they seemed really timid and stuff and i thought i could be in for a let down. I wasn't though. Rivers is quite boring on stage and literally just stands there, playing high-Beatle-style guitar. He solos on most songs though, which i didn't know, & Brian sings all of Getchu too! Only Pat and the new bassist really had good stage presence, but it didn't really matter because they were kicking arse - really good sound, and vocals were really strong.

They opened with Tired of sex, ooogghrrh and then In the garage - so the crowd obviously went nuts. It was a really good mix of old and new throughout (no Susan though..) A couple more songs in & the giant weezer =w= symbol was lowered at the back of stage creating by flashing lights which looked awesome - see Rob symbols are cool! Everyone went nuts. The setlist was sorta like this:

    tired of sex
    in the garage
*, buddy holly, sweater song, say it aint so, getchu, el scorcho, the good life, island in the sun, beverly hills, we are all on drugs, photograph, don't let go, slob
(not in order) * - with a new song every third or fourth.
the encore was hash pipe and lights went spastic and then another new one.

They were real appreciative and stood and waved thanks, while pat made goodbye feedback. So good i almost bought the t-shirt! wish you dudes could have been there, would have been so much better!! Nerdy Fury!!!
